URM1 (Ubiquitin-related modifier 1) is a protein that functions in the post-translational modification of proteins via the Urmylation pathway.  In humans, Urm1 is thiocarboxylated (-COSH) at its C-terminus by the MOCS3 protein in a two-step process that is highly reminiscent of ubiquitin activation by E1 enzymes.  It's been suggested that Urm1 plays a role in oxidative-stress response in mammals, and that the protein may be an evolutionary link between ancient ubiquitin progenitors and the eukaryotic ubiquitin/ubiquitin-like modification systems.  This protein is untagged.
